Mis päriselt mu kehas toimub pärast keemiat / What is really happening in my body after chemotherapy?

Mulle ju tegelikult meeldib kirjutada. Mulle meeldib ka mu töö. Näed, jälle kordan end.

Neljapäeva hommikul olin kella seitsmeks totaalne laip ja vajusin unne. Magasin poolteist tundi. Ärkasin valutava rinna, valutava kaenlaaluse, valutava kurguga.

Vahepeal on kätte jõudnud 18. juuli varahommik. Kell on pool kuus, uni on jälle läinud.

Sööma peab, sest rohud on vaja võtta.

Muus osas on söögiisuga üsna kehvasti.

Ainus asi, mida ma tahan, on vesi.

Viimasel ajal on mu tavapärane temperatuur 35.7-36.2.

Pigem püsib see viimasel ajal seal madala kandis.

Rohida rabarberi ümber umbrohu, tuua poest tomatitele juurde tokke.

Läheme ühte tallu, kus on hobused, keda saab paitada. Ja loodetavasti näen jõe ääres flamingosid.

I do try to stay positive, but what follows is going to be a complete vent. This is what’s really happening to me right now, on a daily basis. I have no idea whether things will get harder. Most likely, yes. “You’re our ray of sunshine and such a beautiful person,” the assistant from the oncology department, Monica, told me yesterday.

While sitting in the psychologist’s office, she told me: “You know, when Monica called and told me that a total ray of sunshine was coming to see me, our most positive patient ever, someone you can’t help but love instantly. I was so excited. And you really are like that. You have such a big heart, and it holds so much love.”

These words give me strength every single day and help me stay positive. They help me find something good in everything. Even in what comes next.

I’m starting to write this down on July 17. I double-check the date a few times, because my chemo brain is so foggy that days, times, everything is a mess. I slept badly Thursday night. Or rather, I woke up at 3 a.m. filled with some kind of half-energy.

I did some work, and I actually like my work. The only thing I really can’t handle right now is criticism. Like early Friday morning, when I opened my work inbox and saw this brutal criticism from a client regarding some stories I had written based on an interview.

I admit, I didn’t fully grasp the topic. The 90-minute interview itself had already been difficult – I was already sick and undergoing chemo at the time. Writing it all up afterward was even harder because I was dealing with a scientist.

After receiving that devastating email, I’m mentally crushed. I want to cry. I want to apologize and say that I wasn’t up to the task and maybe I simplified things too much, trying to make the story accessible. I thought the scientist, who had said I could give him rough drafts, would add his own insights. That’s what we had agreed. Yes, I did format the stories to look complete.

Anyway, the whole thing fell apart, and now I feel like I’m bad, dumb, and awful. Probably rightfully so. I got told off, gently put. And it’s hard to digest, because right now I can’t handle any criticism at all. I know this will haunt me, and I honestly don’t know how to respond to that long email. Not today.

The truth is, I love writing. I love my work. See, I’m repeating myself.

By Thursday morning, I was a total wreck and passed out at 7 a.m. Slept for an hour and a half. Woke up with a sore breast, sore armpit, and sore throat. It had already started during the night.

That night, something happened that scared me for a moment. Lately, my vision has been super blurry when I wake up. It takes a while before I can see clearly. This time, I woke up in pitch darkness, and of course, I couldn’t see anything. “Oh crap! Have I gone blind?!” was my immediate, irrational thought.

I blinked like crazy – nothing. Finally, after few minutes, I could make out the outline of the open door and some furniture in the living room. “Phew, at least I can see something,” I thought with relief.

I dared to turn on a small light and slowly began to see my room more clearly. I found my phone and checked the time. “Only 3 a.m.! Here we go again with this sleep nonsense,” I thought, slightly panicked.

But then I remembered that I had probably fallen asleep around 7 or 8 p.m. So no wonder I was wide awake by 3. Of course, I only fall asleep with sleeping pills, not like Sleeping Beauty pricking her finger. Or actually, maybe I am like Sleeping Beauty, but instead of a spindle, I’ve got a hefty dose of sleeping meds. A real knockout cocktail that only kicks in after a while.

These past few days, one thought has been pounding in my head, the reason I feel even more driven to write all this down honestly. I talked to my cousin, who is like a sister to me. She lost her father, my dear uncle, to cancer years ago. It feels like we’re all still processing Kalmer’s death in our own ways. I don’t think any of us have fully gotten over it. But there was one thing Hegle told me – that my honest writing about what a cancer patient is really going through is helping her better understand what happened to her father.

Most of the time, I don’t even realize I’m sick – that I have cancer. It still feels distant and foreign, even though it’s here. It lives inside me. It gets poison every week, gets that poison right along with me. I wait for it to disappear. It, on the other hand… probably wants to spread even further and take over like a proper alien invader.

It’s now early morning on July 18. The clock says 5:30 a.m. I’ve lost sleep again. I was also up during the night. So I sat between 2 and 3 and read a book. I only managed to fall asleep at 11 p.m. I have a deep fear surrounding this insomnia. I’m afraid of the exhaustion. When I don’t sleep, my anxiety worsens. My body can’t handle anything when that happens.

But there was one good thing about waking up, I actually had an appetite. I made myself a sandwich. Luckily, I also managed to eat a piece of chicken fillet and some couscous (I can’t remember what that’s called in Estonian) that Patrick made. I have to eat, because I need to take my meds.

Apart from that, my appetite has been terrible. It’s either completely gone or nothing tastes right. Everything just seems repulsive, with a flavor I absolutely don’t like. I just don’t want anything. On the worst days, even rye crisps and black bread taste awful. My mouth still tastes unpleasant and my throat still hurts. But I force myself to eat. Again, see, I’m repeating myself. I say it like a mantra: I have to eat to be stronger.

The only thing I truly crave is water. Water and coffee, even though I’ve never been a coffee drinker. I always said I wasn’t an adult yet because I didn’t drink coffee. But it seems I’ve finally grown up, thanks to cancer, because now I like coffee with milk. Or maybe I’m only half-adult since I still don’t drink it black.

Last Saturday and again yesterday, I had another unpleasant side effect – a choking sensation in my throat and neck when I tilt my head down. It just feels like the swollen neck compresses everything and I can’t breathe well. I’m expecting it again today, because this summery heat is absolutely not for me. I used to love summer, but now I hide in dark rooms or shaded corners to escape the sun and warmth.

Around 2 a.m. last night, I also felt feverish. Thankfully, I didn’t have an actual fever because my body temperature was only 36.4°C. Lately, my normal temperature has been 35.7–36.2. It rarely goes higher. Once, when I felt really awful, it was 37.2.

My blood pressure also tends to be either lower or higher than normal. The lowest so far has been 97/58 mmHg, and the highest 160/98 mmHg. Lately, it has mostly stayed on the lower side. I haven’t had high readings that often anymore. Or well, actually I have, but I really don’t understand when or why it happens.

What scares me is that sometimes I don’t know what day it is – is it Thursday, Friday, or Saturday? I always hope it’s Saturday, but then realize, damn, it’s only Friday, and I already feel terrible. I felt bad yesterday too. But at least I managed something. By evening, I somehow pulled myself together enough to go out to the garden with my mom. We weeded around the rhubarb, bought some sticks for the tomatoes. Of course, I didn’t do it alone. I hardly do anything alone anymore.

Alone, I lie down, read, just be, think, write. That’s what my days look like: full of thoughts, discomfort, fleeting moments of okay-ness, fatigue, weakness. Hmm, maybe I’d like another sandwich. So perhaps it’s time to wrap up this post and let you get back to your own lives.

As for me – I plan to rest this weekend, which already starts today. We’re going to a farm with horses you can pet. And hopefully, I’ll see some flamingos by the river.
