Mul on juba ette jubedad süümekad / I already feel terribly guilty

Räägitakse “Oi, mul on vähk, annetage palun Vähiravifondi kaudu mu raviks” heal juhul.

Poolest septembrist see täis saigi.

One night I woke up again at two or three in the morning. I stayed awake, worked, drank tea, even though all tastes had disappeared by then. It would be more accurate to say that everything tasted like an aluminum spoon. Around 7–8 a.m. I started feeling tired again.

Reading and chewing through the study commissioned by the Rescue Board, I wondered if it’s okay that on a good day I can only manage to finish one story, since it involves using both an interview with the Rescue Board’s spokesperson and the processed study itself. My sense of duty tells me to work and a thought ticks in the back of my head that after finishing the story I should still upload a couple of things.

If I’m awake at night anyway, work thoughts tend to creep into my head. I feel guilty that I’m not doing enough. It’s actually crazy… I should be sick right now (I get scolded by doctors every time for still working), focusing on healing. But I feel guilty towards my colleagues, at home, towards everyone.

And absolutely nobody talks openly about this guilt. People say “Oh, I have cancer, please donate via the Cancer Treatment Fund for my treatment” at best. And that’s totally okay to talk about, because the financial stress is huge. For us too. You’re constantly thinking where to get more money.

My own thoughts revolve constantly around money. I was dreading the end of September because I knew the so-called annual quotas of the insurance were about to be used up. By mid-September they were indeed used up. That meant that a day with a simple blood test and a geneticist visit cost €300. I’m still waiting for the chemo bill, with both excitement and fear. I dreamt it was €15,000 and that I didn’t have the money. Luckily it was just a dream.

If I’ve understood all the messages I’ve received correctly, there hasn’t been any prior approval for this either. Next Tuesday, on the last day of September, is immunotherapy… God knows how much that will cost. Anyway, I’m biting my nails from excitement and am, to put it mildly, anxious.

Some time later I should also have the mastectomy along with lymph node removal. I’ve tried to figure out how much it will cost, but I guess the truth will emerge after 30 September, because that’s when I have the surgeon’s appointment where the main topic will be the operation – timing, approximate extent and everything else that comes with it.

Fortunately, a new insurance year period starts on 1 October, and then the tap of costs covered by insurance should open up again at least partially. Okay, enough of this money talk. Otherwise a nest of snakes will start hissing again and I’ll become the worst person in the world trying to steal money from others.

What’s actually going on in my head?

Sometimes I think about why so few dare to speak openly about what’s really happening in their head, body, being. In my head a hundred million thoughts are running around at once. One more bitter than the other, one pushing more than the other. One more self-flagellating than the other. One more scolding than the other. Why am I not doing, why am I not managing, why am I not pulling myself together. But I just can’t. Some days I can’t even read or watch a film.

I watch some series and films I’ve already seen, because at least then I know I’m not missing anything new. That way I can sleep a little more peacefully for a while and then try to do something again afterwards.

I managed one big thing this morning. I finally went to the toilet. My bowels had been blocked again for about four days, even though I’m taking laxatives and softeners.

Oh, by the way, a big thing: David, my dear husband, rented me a wheelchair and a walker. Now I can get around more and “go for walks” with others more. The thing is, this chemo cocktail causes me extreme exhaustion and dizziness with a feeling of fainting comes on quickly. For example, I can’t really go up stairs either, because I immediately start feeling unwell.

But how do I get rid of this guilt that I’m supposedly lazy right now because I can’t focus on work, that I feel so bad and can’t manage. Some days I can’t tolerate noise and light, most days I can’t cook, can’t clean, can’t go for a walk.
