Kas doomscrollimine vähiteemadel aitab kaasa tervenemisele? / Does doomscrolling about cancer contribute to healing?

Loen teiste lugusid, loen nende ravi, kõrvalnähtude, uute leidude, paranemise kohta.

Iga lugu on ju erinev.

See paar tundi onkoloogia osakonnas tegi enesetunnet pisut paremaks.

Suu on seest täiesti puruks.

Meeletu nohu on.

You know how some people doomscroll about war, politics, all that stuff. Well, what do I do? I doomscroll about breast cancer, both triple-negative and invasive breast cancer. I leaf through pages and pages of other people’s stories about treatment, nutrition, metastases, survival, being freed, death, giving up, and everything in between.

I read other people’s stories, I read about their treatments, side effects, new findings, recoveries. At the same time there’s always a little Moomin troll tapping at the back of my head saying, “Please don’t do this. Those stories are not about you; you will get through this!”

Every story is different. Everyone’s cancer is a little different from the next person’s. “I’m going to get better. I’ll be healed by spring. I’ll be free of cancer next summer.” Those are the thoughts I always try to hold in my head. For some completely silly reason, I also believe it with all my heart. I believe it. I even somehow know deep down that I’ll get better. Why? Because I love life, I want to live. I want to live for a long time. I want to have adventures with David. I want adventures with the kids. I want adventures with my mum. I want adventures with my friends.

I have to get better, because I still have so much ahead of me. All the adventures I haven’t had yet, all the joys, all the dances that haven’t been danced, all the moments with David, the kids, my mum, the rest of the family, friends, myself. Yes, I repeat it like some silly mantra because I want it.

A friend recently asked me if I’m not maybe exaggerating all this cancer stuff. I talk about it all the time, I share breast-cancer signs with friends, I bought sneakers that announce I have breast cancer. You know, I don’t know if I’m over-emphasising everything, but right now this is my life.

I am fighting for my life and that’s my way of showing cancer that I can beat it. I want it to leave me, but I don’t want it to go to others. That’s also why I talk about it. I want others to be more aware, to be wiser than me. To not take life for granted. To care more about their health.

I try to stay positive even when I feel awful. Like last Tuesday, a week after the previous chemo. I was really unwell: my body ached, I was nauseous, I felt cold, my nose was stuffed, my throat hurt, my mouth hurt, my big toenail was broken (actually both big toenails are now loose and broken) and my toe hurt, my joints ached like I was getting the flu, I have constant brain fog and can’t remember things. My blood oxygen was low, it fluctuated between 85 and 94.

By evening they gave me an exceptional oncology appointment. They wanted to check me. On Monday, walking up the stairs to the second floor, twice I had moments when I nearly fell down the stairs. My legs just didn’t carry me; I staggered and my vision got a bit fuzzy.

That night I slept poorly again, fragmented, up a lot. Luckily not as much as the night before.

The Tuesday doctor visit turned out a bit different than expected. Because I felt so awful and cold, even though it was sunny and warm outside, I ended up crying from exhaustion and pain. I’ve been crying a lot lately. When I cry I wonder if this is even allowed for me. Do other cancer patients cry from exhaustion and pain? Do others sometimes feel they simply can’t cope?

The doctor didn’t let me go home straight away. Instead they took blood tests. Margarida put some medicine and fluids on a drip for me.

Those couple of hours in oncology improved how I felt a little. It even brought a bit of appetite back, though eating was very painful. But it eased some of the different aches.

What happened? The chemo side effects got really strong again. My bowels had been constipated for days and when I finally managed to go to the toilet I cried from the pain. Because of that I can’t sit yet, because that damned hemorrhoid has come back. Everything feels broken inside. Everything is very painful. Exhaustingly painful. Luckily the doctor prescribed two hemorrhoid medicines and something to soften the stool.

My mouth is a total wreck. I have 4–5 ulcers in my mouth and they’re big. I try to treat them with ulcer medicines, but they’re stubborn and won’t heal.

I’ve got a terrible runny/stuffy nose. The throat is sore: probably from both the ulcers and everything else.

The nail on my right index finger is so sensitive that even typing on the computer hurts.

I can’t stand up for long, can’t walk far, because my vision goes dark. On Tuesday late evening, while stumbling in the kitchen, my sight went for a moment. I don’t remember how I got back to bed.

But here I am now. Tired, exhausted, in pain, but hoping that soon this will all be behind me.
