Mul on üks probleem /I have a problem

Igatahes on üks minu kodutöö järgmine: ma küsin sinult, armas lugeja, miks sa minu blogi loed ja miks sa huvitud minu tegemistest?

Lately, with the help of my therapist and psychologist, I’ve started to understand more clearly that I have one very big problem – I don’t like myself, and I have zero belief in myself.

That self-image I’ve talked about before is still very much out of place, but I am working on it. I’m working on myself and on my relationships. I’m trying to learn to like myself again. I’m trying to work on making my relationship function well. To trust the people around me again.

This past year of illness has completely shattered my previous sense of self and my view of the world. The person I see in the mirror scares me. I don’t know how to accept compliments anymore.

This morning, at my children’s school spring concert, several people complimented me, saying how good I look, how nice my hair is, and so on… and I just… froze. At the same time, I was thinking: why are they saying this? Are they just being polite?

I go around putting on a brave face, pretending that I feel great, but in reality, most of the time I’m just unwell in one way or another. My body is still recovering from everything. I mean, come on — I’m still in treatment.

All of this makes me cry and brings up feelings of self-pity. It creates fear and insecurity that I won’t be able to handle it.

Anyway, one of my “homework assignments” is this: I’m asking you, dear reader, why do you read my blog, and why are you interested in my life? Honestly, why?

When I had to answer this question myself, why I have friends, why people support me, my answer was: I honestly don’t know… maybe out of pity, because there’s nothing interesting about me. I’m naive, a bit mean at times, and stupid. Why would anyone want to be “my person” or be interested in me?

We also talked about the recognition I’ve received, and I said I don’t even understand why I’ve been recognized, probably someone just felt sorry for me.
“Right, because they just handed out Oscars out of pity too,” my therapist laughed.

I’ve come to realize that cancer didn’t just disrupt me physically, it shattered my mental self into pieces as well. And now it’s time to slowly start picking up those pieces and somehow rebuild myself.

You know what I think cancer is most like?
It’s like being in a traumatic accident and having to learn everything all over again.

You have to learn how to live again – from the very beginning.
