Lisaks niisama arstide vahet voorimisele käin ma ka psühholoogi juures. See naine, kelle onkoloogia osakonna assistent Monica mu teele juhatas on lihtsalt imeline.
Vaimne tugi on ühe vähihaige jaoks ülioluline – just sellisel arusaamisel olen mina.
Ootan teid alati!
Elan teile alati kaasa! Rõõmustan ka kõige väiksema edu üle. Olen alati uhke, et olen just teie nelja ema!

In addition to going from one doctor to another, I also see a psychologist. The woman whom the oncology assistant, Monica, introduced me to is simply wonderful. She understands me deeply. She lets me speak. She speaks my language. And I don’t mean English or Portuguese – I mean the language of the heart and true understanding.
For someone with cancer, mental support is absolutely essential, that’s what I’ve come to believe. It helps unravel at least a small part of the tangle that lives inside. Yes, oncologists and other doctors do incredibly important work treating the body, but psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists are just as crucial. They – the soul doctors – help you cope with everything else. Even with the scariest and most tired thoughts.
One idea that came from my therapist and psychologist was this: since I love writing, I should write letters. Some of these are for one specific person only. Some I choose to share with you.
Today seems to be one of those forced bed days, I feel weak, and I don’t have much energy. So I thought I’d share my first open letter with you. I wrote it to my children.
Dear Patrick, Maru, Elsa, and Nora,
I love you more than anything else in this world, and I can’t imagine a single day without you in my life. You are part of me, and always will be. And I am part of you – forever. That will never change.
Not even when the day comes that I’m no longer here.
But that day is still far away. I don’t know when it will come, but I promise to do everything I can to be part of your lives for many more years. I want to still be your mom at 90. To love you just the same as I loved you yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
If there’s one thing I want to give you to carry with you in life, it’s this: nothing in the world is more precious than family. The kind that lives in your heart – your children, your partner, your parents, your friends – those who make up your true family.
Every family is different. Sometimes, because of life or complicated relationships, someone is missing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t build your own family, made up of whoever feels like home to you. Whether they’re bound by blood or found on the journey of life.
Family is always changing. Some members leave, and others arrive.
I hope I remain your family for as long as life gives me days. What comes after, I don’t know. None of us know — not until we cross that threshold into what may be eternal sleep from this world.
I know my illness affects each of you. You’re confused, scared. You see when I’m not well, and you see when I feel a bit better. And that’s okay. But I want you to know that you can always talk to me about your fears. You can tell me when you’re scared. You can always curl up beside me. I’ll always be here for you. I’ll always be waiting for you.
I’ll always cheer for you. Celebrate even the tiniest win. I am endlessly proud to be your mother. So grateful that the four of you chose me for this role. And I’ve tried to learn from all our shared lessons. I’ll keep trying.
And I’ll try to be an even better mom, more than ever before.
